Mother's Day - What to get a new mum

We've put together a little blog about Mother's Day with an idea for a great present for a new mum!
Picture
Hi everyone,

Mother’s Day is on the 27th March…in the UK! Actually, here in Italy, Mother’s Day (or Festa della Mamma) will be celebrated on May 8th! Australia, the USA and many other countries including South Africa, Japan and Finland also celebrate their mothers on the same date as the Italians.
While the American Mother’s Day originates from 1914 after a campaign by Anna Jarvis, whose own mother had died the previous May, the British version has religious origins. Christians were encouraged to visit the ‘mother church’ on the fourth Sunday of lent. Apologies if you already knew this! I didn't and had always wondered why it is celebrated on different dates, only after starting writing today’s blog did it occur to me to actually look up the history behind it!

Baby Fun time Clean time Bath time

Here's the latest blog from our single dad of two boys living in Italy! If you produce bath toys why not enter this year's Bambini Baby Awards! Or if you have babies, toddlers or young children, check out our winners in June!

Hi everyone,

Today I want to write about bath time!
I have two boys and they love their box of bath toys. I have a box of different sea-creatures, boats and other random items like a tea-set! Kids can be funny though and although both of them love bath-time, there are occasions (usually when they’re most filthy) that they put up resistance! Often we’ll compromise on a ‘one and done’, meaning a quick one minute bath but I know once they’re in, they soon change their mind and will stay in for a lot longer! That’s great for me as it gives me a chance at a quick tidy-up in the bathroom.
also means I know they’re going to the nursery/school clean the next day and that they’ll probably get off to sleep more easily. The main downsides are that it’s a pain keeping them mould-free and they need a thorough cleaning regularly. I have recently come across some beautiful mould-free ducks by Cuddledry which don’t have any holes for mould to grow inside of, are 100% safe for babies and are BPA Free. Rubber duckies are of course an essential for bath-time but these will save us from hours of scrubbing while providing peace of mind.
Another fantastic product that I know my kids would love is the Ducky Fishing Game from Trotters. Now the kids need to use their coordination to fish little duckies out of the bath using little wooden rods. These would also be great for the paddling pool in the summer and would make a super game for when friends come over to play!

Tips for Toddler Tooth Brushing

Picture
Whether or not our toddler brushes her teeth is bit like Russian Roulette but we have found the tips below have helped improve her teeth brushing skills!
  1. A choice of toddler toothbrushes. Our little one likes the empowerment of being able to choose her toothbrush so we have 2 or 3 that she can choose from.
  2. We involve her as much as possible, even squeezing on the baby toothpaste, though mind the mess!
  3. Children’s Toothbrushing YouTube videos. Whilst I’m not a massive fan tv before bed, our toddler is much more attentive brushing her teeth when we play one of the many baby toothbrushing videos found on YouTube.

Choosing Baby Skincare Products

Baby & Toddler Awards Tips for choosing baby skincare products
Good morning mamas & papas!

Today we are going to be looking at things to consider when choosing the right skincare for your baby.  Babies have far more sensitive skin than adults.  Did you know what most babies will develop a rash in the first 6 months of their lives?  Harsh environmental factors such as detergents, soaps, dyes, chemicals, sun and even your jumper can bring your baby out in a rash.  Always be sure to check with a doctor though, just in case there isn't something more serious.

Here at the Baby & Toddler Awards, we see and try a wide range of baby skincare products.  So we've compiled a list of things to consider when choosing skincare for your baby, as creams can provide a protective barrier against environmental factors.  At the same time, skincare products themselves can irritate babies, so you need to choose the best product for YOUR baby.

Tip 1 - Use your intuition
You know your baby best and probably have a feel for when their skin gets irritated or why.  So choose products with this in mind.

Tip 2 - Do a patch test
It goes without saying to do a patch test on your baby when trying out new baby products.  Try a small patch on the arm or leg (not face) 24hours to 48 hours before in case there is any reaction

Tip 3 - Choose products designed for babies
This may sound obvious, but of course baby products have been designed specifically for the sensitive skin of babies.  Check the product is dermatologically tested.

Tip 4 - Don't overload your baby with skincare
Try one cream at a time.  Whether you are just trying to keep your baby's skin hydrated and smooth, or you need to find the right nappy cream - try not to overload your baby's skin using multiple products

Tip 5 - Don't fix what ain't broke
If a skincare product works - stick with it!  It's best not to expose your baby to too many types of products.  If something works for you and your baby, stick with that product.

Tip 6 - Look at the ingredients.
Look for things that YOUR BABY needs.  Do you need it to be Hypoallergenic?  Do you need SPF as it is summer, or maybe it is winter and you have a very fair baby?  Is it oil or cream based?  Organic ingredients mean there are no harsh pesticides in the ingredients.  'Natural ingredients' this is less regulated, but the idea is, products which ingredients from nature are more packed full of nutrition, are less environmentally harsh and don't contain man-made harsh chemicals.  Don't be put off if a product isn't natural though - many SPFs are man-made.  Think about your baby, and what your baby needs.

Studying with a baby, what was I thinking?

Picture
Guest mum Jenna gives us insight into her experiences of studying with a child

Pre-baby I had all these romantic notions that I could spend my free time on maternity leave to study for a Masters course. Fast-forward to the present day and oh how I laugh! I had anticipated that I might be able to catch up on study in the mornings and evenings – HA! That would be all well and good if I had any sleep at night!

The benefits of baby massage

Benefits of Baby Massage

Massaging your baby doesn’t have to be the actions of a massage guru, as mum/dad/caregiver, you are the expert! The benefits of massage can include improvement to circulation, digestion and relaxation as well as giving you more of that precious skin-to-skin contact with your baby.

Much of baby massage is instinctive, however if you’d like a hand there are plenty of online baby massage courses, books and YouTube videos. As for massage oils, there are an array of choices depending on you and your baby’s needs. Some parents might dash for coconut oil  from the cupboard whilst there are also plenty of baby specific oils on the market. For babies with eczema you may need to speak to your health visitor and/or trial until you find the best one for your baby’s skin. One thing to note is that olive oil can inhibit some of the natural oils the body produces and tends not to be encouraged.

Baby massage can be done at any time of day but many parents like to bring it in to their bedtime routine to bring calmness and relaxation to the evenings proceeds.

We personally found baby massage to be best for babies from just a couple of days old up until 6 months old.  For young babies it is a great way to develop a bond with baby as they aren't communicating verbally with you yet but will love to feel your touch.  The relaxation of baby massage not only brings you closer to baby, but it can help soothe and calm them, as well as reduce colic. After 6 months old those babies are a lot more wriggly and probably don't need so much help with reflux any more.  That's not to say older babies still won't love a gentle foot massage or back rub. Change your massage to suit your baby's needs and give them as frequently as you like.  They will be sure to love all the one on one time with you and the feel of your touch.

Why not use baby oils with calming scents if it is part of bed time routine?  Many babies struggle with getting to sleep, and bringing a reassuring smell at night time into their baby massage routine could really help them associate  the scent with bed time.

Don't be nervous if you aren't an expert or if you haven't done any courses.  Just have a go at home with your baby oil.  Have fun with your baby, as they will love all these extra cuddles and attention.
